New E-Governmnet Applications From Social Network Based Augmented Reality Project

SAMPAŞ is representing Turkey in a new social network based augmented reality project called CRUMBS. The project, supported by CELTIC - a European research and development programme, is expected to enrich user experience with a set of brand-new e-Trade, e-Tourism and e- Government applications.

According to new research – only this year- the amount of people who used their mobile devices in order to access social networks (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) has reached 800 billion worldwide. CRUMBS Project builds on this trend in creating an augmented reality platform that is to deliver a set of innovative mobile services by collecting, organizing and re-presenting location-based, time aware and personalized user created content on a social network structure.

Everyday people leave traces of their social activities in and around the physical world they interact with. CRUMBS Mobile Social Platform proposes a new way of organizing user generated content by applying geo-spatial logic and social-perspective on a traditional information time-sorting-based approach.  In this manner, CRUMBS platform aims at taking our surrounding physical environment and overlapping it with enriched social media content through the use of mobile technologies. In an attempt to change the way we interact with the physical world, CRUMBS platform is to incorporate an Augmented Reality Engine that will make it possible for users to access rich social media content created and fixed at a certain location at a certain time by other users through the use of their mobile device cameras.

In other words,  users - who have CRUMBS Application installed on their mobile devices- will be able to point their camera to any given object at a point of interest (museum, palace, etc.) and access all rich social media content created by other users who formerly have interacted with the same object. CRUMBS will merge all the content that is on the internet about a specific object with the user created content produced 360 degrees around it.

CRUMS will last fourteen months and is expected to have an impact on eBusiness, eTourism and eGovernment areas with new innovative applications that will lead to a new level of interaction between users and among users and entities. The results of the project are to be tested in different real world scenarios.

Supported by CELTIC European research and development programme, CRUMBS Project is expected to last until May 1, 2013. SAMPAŞ is taking part in the project with support from TÜBİTAK.
